Beware of Free Teeth Whitening Offers

Teeth whitening has become as common as getting your nails done at a salons. Dentists, especially in cosmetic dental clinics, offer promotions and discounts to whiten your teeth for much less than a few years ago. In addition, countless over the counter whitening kits are available for purchase and we are continuously bombarded by “free trials” and other teeth whitening offers on the web. However, the million dollar question that remains to be asked is “are they at all reliable”?

Getting your teeth whitened at dental clinics is probably the most reliable method, although the cost may be on the upside. Teeth whitening medical technology has made tremendous leaps in the past decade and with devices such as Zoom, teeth whitening has become quicker and safer with less sensitivity and side-effects.  Dentists will check to see if you are eligible to receive the treatment and also provide  check-ups after the procedure.

The major branded over the counter whitening products are deemed to be quite reliable. The concentration of active ingredients in whitening gels and solutions is strictly regulated in the UK and clinical studies have shown that bleaching chemicals (such as hydrogen peroxide) do not have any detrimental side-effects to the health.  The British Dental Health Foundation recommends that you purchase major consumer goods brands for whitening solutions.

Watch out for Whitening Products That are Too Good to Be True

In addition to the in-office whitening procedures and reliable over the counter whitening kits, you will find that there are countless teeth whitening product manufacturers available, especially on the web. They claim to offer a teeth whitening bargain that in reality is actually more like a scam. As with any other product or service, something too good to be true is probably not.

Products that Claim Very Fast, Perhaps Too Fast, Results : More than anything, you should see red lights flashing if the product claims to whiten your teeth instantly or in a matter of days. Currently, the only proven method to whiten your teeth in a short time is to receive laser (or ultraviolet) treatment from the dentist.  Even after such treatments, the dentist usually gives out whitening kits to maintain the brightness and make the teeth whiter.  Whitening gels and kits usually take at least 2~3 weeks for notable changes to your teeth’s colour, as the concentration of bleaching ingredient is regulated.

Research from the British Dental Health Foundation has found that various smaller branded whitening products contain as much as hundred times the allowed active ingredient concentration.  This may cause irritation to the gum and teeth, while the side-effects are not clearly known.

Products that Offer Free Trials: On the web, there are many companies which offer free trials on the whitening kits. Unfortunately hundreds of consumer complaints have risen from these companies, as these “free” trials eventually charged the consumers for the product.  These companies have affected consumers in more than 40 states in the US, in Canada, and the United Kingdom.

Online web advertising and promotional emails do not disclose sneaky terms and conditions that will charge you for the product, even if it did not really work out for you.  Thus, rather than seeking to whiten teeth free, it is best to consult your dentist or seek for a reliable source of whitening products at reputable companies.
